Kate was tying her colored mare to the stall wall as she waited for Alea to arrive. Her horse has aquirred a fairly nasty cut on her lower leg whilst in the field and had managed to destroy her bandage.
She had carefully unpeeled each ripped and dirty layer carefully. Trying not to hurt her beloved partner.
Soul shifted uncomfortably from side to side as the dressings were removed. As the cold air hit the wound she snorted, relieved to be free from the hot material. She'd tried to get it off whilst her human left the barn. It hadn't really worked and just made it even more uncomfortable. She loved her human, who always made things better. What would she do without her? The warm fingers of the two-legged glided over her cut softly, making it hurt even more.

Alea jogged into the barn. "I'm here!..Whoa, ouch." Alea's voice trailed off as she spotted a horse with a rather painful looking cut. "Kate ya there?," she asked peering around the horse after giving it a quick pat.

Kate looked from around the stall door and gave a large grin. "Hey!" she smiled, pushing herself to stand up. "Today I think we'll be looking at Souls laceration. She cut herself in the field and will not keep her dressings on." she chuckled scratching the mare's ear.
Soul eyed the new student cautiously as with any other human. Sensing she wasn't a threat she relaxed, letting her pat her neck. Her head then bobbed playfully, stamping her hooves against the hard barn floor. Because of the cut to her legs she'd been having some stable rest for the past few days, how boring! She hated stable rest and her master had forgotten to give her a toy. Humans are so forgetful!
"Okay, so first we need to clean the wound." she said, puling the hose from the floor which was freely seeping clear liquid. Kate held it firmly, pressing her thumb over the end, making the water part into a sheild of fluid. Holding it just above the wound she let the water clean the deep cut.

Alea giggled as the mare looked at Alea in a funny way. She watched carefully as her instructor cleaned out the wound. "So, is there any specific temperature needed to clean it the best? Hot, cold, warm?," she said, "Just wondering."

"Cold is best. It reduces swelling and keeps the flies off. Plus it numbs the pain and makes it less painful to touch." she answered, happy her student was asking questions insted of just watching.
"The wound should be regularly cleaned and rid of any new scab that may form during the night. It may trap some dirt and cause an infection. But don't worry about taking it off cos' it doesn't stop the healing process." ,once the cut was free of the dirt and looked nice and clean she twisted the tap so no more water came from it's muzzle. "Next we'll be applying some topical treatment to the area. Dr. Kerbeys Herbal Solution works best for Soul. But obviously if you were treating your or a clients horse there will proberly be a different cream they prefere." she explained, opening the lid to the grey tub that she pulled from her medic box. "Now if you rub it into the skin around the cut and and a little into the actual cut. This makes sure it's clean and stimulates the skin to repair itself."

She smiled at her praise, "Alright, cold water's best, got it!" Alea rubbed Soul on her whithers and the horse half closed her eyes at the pleasure. "Another question, when you apply it inside the wound, do you put it on thick or thin? My gut kinda tells me thick because it'll last a little longer, but it also says thin so the wound can breath. I'm kinda dumbfounded!" she said muffling a laugh.

"I just keep it pretty thin so the wound can breathe. You change the dressings every three days or so, then you just keep topping it up." she explained.

Alea continued rubbing the horse's whithers, "Alright, sounds good. Either way you're using the same amount of treatment right?" She observed Kate closely as to how to apply it.
(Alright, See ya later then!)

Next she pulled out a long peice of mterial that she used to put directly on the wound. She quickly applied it so Song had no time to see or smell it. "Okay now you have to remember these steps when putting on a bandage. Otherwise it had cause tendon problems. Firstly start off with the edge of the bandage over the front of the cannon bone. Bring the roll of the bandage to the outside of the horse's body. Now bring the roll back towards the horse's tail before passing it around the inside of the horse's leg. Pull lightly to tighten the bandage as it comes across the front of the cannon bone." she worked as she talked, swiftly moving her hands in and out of the leg carefully.

"Neato," she said as she stared dumbfounded. "Not at the wound, but at the fact that you can do that that fast and that carefully." Alea watched carefully and posted sticky notes in her mental filing cabinets. "Before I forget I've gotta tell you that on the weekends, I'll be at my farm and I'll only be here with one of my horses on the weekdays. I still haven't decided whether I'll keep my dorm here though." And then returned to watching her tutor.
