Alea was practically pulled inside the arena by her excited colt. She knew he loved to longe, his second favorite activity besides the pasture, because he could run, canter, and trot without wieght on his back. In fact Alea wasn't heavy at all. When she rode Arkan the only time he actually felt her on his back was when she gave aids, it was the saddle that he felt weight with.
Alea replaced his lead rope with the longe and started him at a walk. She didn't have much trouble getting him to go a specific pace, for it was getting him to hold that pace which was the problem. He always wanted to run, and Alea did a great job of organizing when and where he could do so. Alea always let Arkan know when was the right time to do anything, and now was not the time for him to pull his silly colt tricks. She had him pick up a trot, smooth and steady, and he kept it..but for long, he then broke into a slow rolling canter and Alea had to correct him. She had only had him for about a year and a half. but he had made so much progress while in her hands, and she loved him. Wasn't that all that mattered?
"Easy boy, you're not runnin' today." She lengthed the longe and let him have a little more room. The sun had just risen above the horizon when she finished in the arena. And Arkan knew exactly what time it was. FOOD!, at most times Alea wondered if that was all a horse ever thought about, well, her horse anyways. She replaced the longe with the lead and headed for the gait, and onward to the roan barn.
