The lorry stopped right out side the roan barn. The pulled up, coming to a halt. Emma opened the door, looking out at the new surroundings. Without a word to her father, she jumped out and walked over the side door of the lorry. She opened the groom’s area and climbed in, grabbing another lead rope.
By the time she left her dad was at the back of the horsebox, waiting for her.
“You ready?” He asked, smiling at Emma. She nodded her head. “Ok then. Lets get this door down.”
Emma didn’t say anything. She was used to doing this sort of thing. They normally took this lorry to the shows, so she was familiar with it. Once they unlocked it, the started lowering it down.
“I’ll get Abbie for you. That’ll be a less of a handful for you. Yeah, what do you say?” He asked, smiling at her as they both walked up the ramp.
“Yeah.” She croaked. She hardly talked for the most of the journey. There was no point small talking. Once conversation died she would just daydream.
Abbie was first in the partitions. She pricked her ears at the light and whinnied with her mouthful of hay. Emma’s dad walked up to her, speaking softly, knowing what the pony was like. “Hey girl.” He said, holding out a hand. Polo was resting in his palm. Abbie lowered her head, keeping those ears pricked. She sniffed his hand and took the polo.
Emma walked towards the bigger horse, Lily. “Hey girl.” She said, clearing her voice. She rumbled in her Jodhpur pocket for a sweet or mint for her. Nothing. She tried her coat, and got a crumbed horse treat. Lily took it with delight. Emma patted her neck, unclipping the lorry leadrope and attaching her own. “Come on!”
She walked her down the ramp where her dad was waiting at the bottom. The wind hit Lily’s face, sending her mane and forelock back, floating in the breeze. She half shut her eyes. Emma looked her up and down as Lily had stopped half way on the ramp to look at her new surroundings. She had all her travelling gear. They matched each other, the boots, travelling rug and headcoller. Her cross-country colours, even though Emma didn’t do much cross-country.
“Com’ on girl.” She said, clicking with her tongue. “Time to get you into you’re stall.”
